Solar pool covers
m
A Solar/Gas system to heat water in your pool is by far the simplest application of solar energy.  It can all but eliminate the use of your gas pool heater during most of the swimming season.
m
As filtered water from the pool is circulated through the system collectors, it absorbs the sun's radiant heat.  The heated water is then normally returned to the pool through the existing pool circulating system
m
There is no need for an additional storage tank, as the pool is it's own storage tank.
m
Maintaining pool water temperature will require a number of collectors, depending on the size and location of your pool and the desired water temperature.  The manufacturer or solar contractor will calculate this for you.
m
Since Solar/Gas pool heating is relatively uncomplicated, you may want to install your own.  But whether you have a contractor install it or do it yourself, consider
.these suggestions:
m
.1.  Since a swimming pool doesn't require high temperature water, low temperature collectors can be used.
.2.  Automatic controls can be included to start and stop the system as weather conditions change.
.3.  The system should include a check valve to prevent backwashing of collector water into the filtering system .when the pool filter pump shuts off.
.4.  To protect the system in areas where freezing is a problem, use a vacuum relief valve.  This valve allows for .draining of the collector and prevents damage.

SOLAR POOL COVERS
Don't forget a solar pool cover.  A pool cover is an important part of any efficient solar and/or gas fired pool heating system.
m
Much of the warmth provided to the pool by solar or conventional heating systems will be lost at night or on cool days if the pool is left uncovered.
m
A pool cover also helps to keep dirt out and debris and reduces
.the amount of chemicals needed to maintain the pools water quality.  Covers also save water by retarding .evaporation.
m
.When properly used, a pool cover is a good investment that conserves natural gas and water and helps minimize .pool operating costs.
